The easiest way to get to grips with Wordwall 3 is to take a hands-on approach. This tutorial takes you step-by-step though the process of making a very simple activity.

The stage indicator

The stage indicator is always present at the top of each screen in the edit mode. It lets you know which stage of process of activity creation you are at and which have been completed. You can jump back to previous stages by clicking on the indicator.

1. Pick a template

The first step is to pick a template from the gallery. Each of these templates represents a different format of teaching resource. And each template can in turn be used to play a number of games and activities.

Note that you can filter the templates into particular categories using the selector in the top-right of the gallery. For example, you might select 'Wordpad 2' to filter it down to only those templates that contain activities that work with the handsets.

Pick Flip tiles as our example for this step-by-step guide. Click on its icon and you'll move to the next stage.

2. Enter your content

This is the stage where you put your teaching content into the template. This might be questions, answers, keywords and prompts. At this stage, you don't worry about what it's going to look like - you just get the information in.

In the Flip tiles template you are required to enter two columns of information. In this tutorial, we'll find some images of animals and put them on the left hand side. Then we'll name that animal and put them on the right hand side.

Lets start with the text first. Simply type when into white box, using either return or down cursor to move on to the next. You might enter, "tiger... gorilla... koala... panther..." for example.

Now for the images. Pop open the search tab(far left). This will now show an search box and go button. You can type into the box what image you want to find and then press go. A quick shortcut it to click on the "no image" area next to the pieces of text you put in. This will place the text into the box without you having to type it twice.

Once you've found an image you like, drag and drop it into the left hand side row as shown in the screenshot.

You might notice the 'template options' at the bottom of the screen. Usually we can just leave these as they are, but feel free to experiment by opening that tab if you wish.

Once you've entered your content the hard bit is over. Now is a good time to go to the 'file' menu and select 'save'.

Click on 'Next' when you are ready to move on.

3. Choose the game

Each template have more than one game associated with them. These are essentially different ways of using the same resource that you've created.

For this tutorial, just stick with the default selection, 'Turn over'. The rules for this game are briefly described in the list. You'll also notice that there are options that can be accessed at the bottom of the screen. For example, you could set a time limit for your game.

Below the preview is the Theme settings. Any activity you make can be drawn in one of a selection of different aesthetics. Try clicking on a few and see how the preview changes. Note that different selections of themes are available with different templates.

When you're ready to move on, click 'Play'.

4. Play

The play mode is the part of the sequence that you would use with your audience present. It's akin to the slide show mode in a product like PowerPoint.

The first thing you’ll see is a short guide to remind you which options you selected and give brief instructions. It's important to take note of the controls at this stage.

The controls vary depending on which template and game you are using. In our example you'll have two options: tapping a tile will zoom into it a tile to highlight it (tap again to zoom out), swiping a tile will flip it over to reveal its over side.

This is a great time to be explaining to the audience what it is you are going to ask them to do. Tap on instructions panel to make it disappear and start the activity.

During play, you can manipulate your activity using the controls. Try playing around flip the tiles and zooming around the screen. Imagine the kind of activities you might play with your audience. The flexibility of Wordwall gives teachers enormous latitude to run activities they way they want to.

The in-game menu button are always present in the bottom left. Press this and menu will appear giving you additional options. Note that this also paused the activity.

When the menu is up, you can always tap 'resume' to return to play or 'exit' to get back to the edit mode. When you've done here, select exit to proceed.

5. Review

This stage give you information about the activity you've just played. It also gives you options about what to do next.

On the left side of the screen are various tab buttons. Some of these will be grayed out if they aren't relevant to the particular game you played.

You don't need to do anything on this screen if you don't want to. So let's end the tutorial there. Play around for a while and you'll be creating exciting activities in no time.
